Episode 330 – Deorum: God’s Among Us – Weston L. Collins pt 2

Weston L. Collins Interview

Today’s guest is going to be discussing a subject that does not get that much attention in today’s media climate…but needs to be discussed. Weston L. Collins comes from, what one could say, is an upper middle class environment. His mother was a teacher with two MS degrees and his father was a career special forces officer in the Army. Weston attended Texas A&M Kingsville, TX on a football scholarship. He was injured and that ended his football days – but he continued on in his studies and settled down in the San Antonio, Texas area.

He married and his wife is a family law attorney and they currently have no children. Weston assists in the office and is also a mediator in his own right.

One day, Weston was talking with a young boy who was playing a video game. The child really was enjoying the interactive features of the game when Weston asked him if he “wanted to do those things” which the hero in the game was doing.  Weston was saddened when the boy responded, “Black people don’t do that stuff. I would love it if I could, but I’m black, so it not for me.”

That’s when Weston decided he was going to make a difference in how young people of color view themselves. He created a non-profit with one of his friends, called S.T.E.P. (which we will get into). STEP shows underprivileged youth different cultural experiences to make them more of a “well rounded” person. (Which we will get into).

But Weston was not finished there.

He went to work writing a novel where he created a super-hero that looked like, sounded like and made decisions like the children that Weston helps in his non-profit. He wants them to see themselves in the characters, and to change their perception of themselves…

Oh, did I forget to mention… Weston himself is black?

Weston has been featured on several different podcast and radio programs – and he is here with us today. Help me welcome to the program, Weston Collins as his pen name. Weston, thank you for coming on the program!

OK…take me back to the beginning.  Your parents. Mom’s a teacher and dad is in Special Forces.  You were brought up, basically, as a military brat. The military prides itself on integration.  Were you brought up that way as well?  Not to judge based on color?

Ok…you started at college on a football scholarship. What happened? How did you get injured?

You decided to stay…congratulations on that.  Did you meet your wife while in school?

Do you consider yourself “Privileged?”

Tell me about the day you asked that young man if he “wanted to do the super hero” thing…

How did that affect you?

So you decided to write a novel. Tell me the thought processes you used to settle on that format…

What is the name of the book?  “Deorum: God’s Among Us”

And this is about a 13 year old boy who discovers he is descendant of an Egyptian god of war, correct? Tell us about the premise of the book…

How did you decide on the characters that would be included in the novel?

Tell me about the super-hero for the novel?

What is your goal with this novel?

Is it available on Amazon? We will put a link to it in our show notes.

In the final minutes, I want to talk about your non-profit, STEP. What does that stand for?  “Show Them Everything Positive”

How does it work?  Who do you help and how?

Weston, if someone wanted to get in touch with, maybe to ask a question, or to get you to do an interview such as this, how can they do that?

Weston, I want to thank you for taking the time to come on our program today. I appreciate all that you are doing to make a difference in this current culture today. I pray God will continue to bless you and your lovely wife, your non-profit and make this book into a best seller…and tell you father, from one Army Officer to another, “Thank you for his service” for me, will you?

Folks, that’s all the time we have for today. I want to encourage you to click the link in the show notes or to go over to Amazon and get Weston’s book. Give to your church or give it your library – or give it to a kid in the neighborhood – order two or three and do “all of the above!” Glory to God!  We are not limited – God will give you the resources to do it…just trust Him! Amen.

Well, for Weston Collins and myself, this is Pastor Robert Thibodeau reminding you to be BLESSED IN ALL THAT YOU DO!
