Rethinking Rest - Gregory Hall pt 1
Rethinking Rest
Gregory Hall pt 1
As Christians, we have heard the continuous arguments back and forth about a “Day of Rest.” Another term used is as “Sabbath of Rest.” The arguments form around if that is simply an Old Testament tradition that no longer is applicable for this modern age or Saturday’s are the day that needs to be recognized or Sunday is the day true “Christians” should observe because it is in recognition of the resurrection of Christ.
The divides are deep on this topic. They have resulted in denominational splits. These arguments have split families. These arguments have affected peoples employment opportunities as well.
To help us understand the true Biblical concept of REST is our guest, Gregory Hall. Greg was a pastor for 10 years and he served as an adjunct professor at a few local universities where he lives in the Northwest US. He has a podcast called, “Rethinking Scripture” and is the author of a great book, “Rethinking Rest: Why Our Approach to Sabbath Isn’t Working.”
I’m looking forward to this interview as I believe it will open our eyes to what the Bible truly has to say about this topic.
First question I always start with though, is this. Other than that brief information I just shared, can you tell us in your own words, “Who is Gregory Hall?”
In your book, “Rethinking Rest: Why Our Approach to Sabbath Isn’t Working,” you make a distinction between “rest” and “sabbath.” Can you explain that for us?
We know some denominations that follow the tradition that Saturday is the Biblical day of the Sabbath. We also have many, Christian denominations in particular, that recognize Sunday as the Sabbath because that is the day of the week that Jesus rose from the dead. I guess I have two questions at this point…
- Does it matter as long as we are recognizing a Day of Rest as a Sabbath?
- If it does matter, which day is correct?
A question that comes up frequently is this: In Genesis, we see that “God rested” on the 7th day. But some will ask, “If God is all powerful, why did He need to rest?” In your book, you share a different perspective on this view. Can you share that with us?
There are many professions, I was in the military and also in law enforcement, and we were required to work rotating schedules that would include working on some Saturday’s and Sunday’s. Some were on, some off. Hospitals and other professions do the same. How does the Biblical “day of rest” and the “Sabbath” apply to those professions? Are people in “sin” because of their work schedule?
Drop down into the show notes and order your copy of Greg Hall’s great book, right now. Do it while you are thinking about it. Don’t’ give the devil chance to try and distract you and make you forget. AmenCONTACT INFORMATION:
