Surviving the First Five Minutes of a School Shooting

Daniel Dluzneski pt 2

We have all seen the news reports of active shootings taking place in schools, businesses and things like that. We have all watched as parents grieve and people ask,

“Why?”

“Why did this happen?”

“What could have been done differently?”

We all remember Columbine… it was after that event that “active shooter” training started to be taught to law enforcement. I had to go through it as a police officer. I prayed I would never need to use it… but I was ready if it ever took place.

You don’t have time for S.W.A.T. in most cases.  In fact, you don’t really have time for the police to arrive before you take some kind of action.  This is now taught to churches, businesses and schools across the country.

At the first indication of an active shooter, the first five minutes are the most important for your survival and those you love and care about. If you do the right thing in those first few minutes, your chances of survival jump immensely.

Remember the adage, “When you need help now, the police are only minutes away.”

Our guest today specializes in conducting “Active Shooter Training” for schools and businesses.

Daniel Dluzneski is a retired 24 year member of US Secret Service Agency. The Former Coordinator for Emergency Management, Safety and Security for the Pinellas County Schools in Florida and the author of very important book titled, appropriately, “The First Five Minutes: School Shooting Survival Guide for Administrators and Teachers.”

This is part two and the conclusion of a very important interview that needs to be shared far and wide in this day and time in which we live...

I remember when we were running active shooter drills with our department, we were a State Police agency and had state buildings, etc. to protect, as well as infrastructure, etc.  Without going into all of the details because I don’t want to give away tactics, etc. in case someone is listening…  we knew the initial responding officers would be the ones to make entry. There was no more, surround and secure and wait 30-45 minutes for the SWAT team. You were going in and you needed to rely on your patrol partners in the process.

I don’t want to get into the procedures and tactics from the law enforcement perspective, but in your book, you give several steps administrators can use to increase the survivability of this type of situation.  You start with the effectiveness of lockdowns. Can you share with us the “how and why” this is a vital first step?

From my military time, I loved unannounced operational readiness drills. This would test the true readiness of a unit. I know the schools would like advance notice of a drill to give everyone a “heads up,” but that is actually not a realistic test. Did you advocate the use of unannounced drills for schools?

There was always that, “This will never happen here” mentality – especially in small town America, right?

Share with us about your book, “The First Five Minutes: School Shooting Survival Guide for Administrators and Teachers.”  Why did you write this book and why publish it now?

Daniel, this has been so informative. If someone wanted to obtain a copy of your book, how can they do that? Is it on Amazon?

If someone wanted to reach out to you, ask a question or maybe have you come out to their business or location, how can they do that? How can someone get in touch with you?

I’ll put links to all of this in the show notes below.

Folks, unfortunately, the day and time in which we live is one in which things like this are starting to happen more and more. Our society is devolving and not evolving. It used to be unthinkable that situations like we discussed today would ever happen. Now, not only do we see them happening more and more – we actually need to prepare for them happening.

I urge you, at a minimum, to drop down into the show notes and order a copy of Daniel Dluzneski’s book, “The First Five Minutes: School Shooting Survival Guide for Administrators and Teachers.”  I would hope and pray you never need to implement any of the emergency situations in this book. But, if you do, they will save your life and the lives of those around you.

If you are a teacher or school administrator, I’d recommend reaching out to Daniel and possibly have him come by your school district and see if he can be of assistance. Amen!

But, like I said, at a minimum, you need to drop down into the show notes and purchase his book, right now – while it is fresh in your mind. Amen!

Daniel, thank you for taking the time to come on the program today. This was so insightful and I want to thank you, first for your service to this nation in law enforcement and also for putting together this information in a book formatfor easy consumption. I do appreciate you coming on the program today.

Folks, that is all the time we have for today. For Daniel Dluzneski and myself, this is Pastor Bob reminding you to BE BLESSED IN ALL THAT YOU DO!

About your host

Profile picture for Robert Thibodeau

Robert Thibodeau

I am a 12 year Army veteran as both enlisted and as a commissioned Cavalry Officer.
I am now a retired law enforcement supervisor...

I had my own business for seven years before I entered law enforcement.

As a cop, I was injured on the job on May 12, 2007 and after several surgeries over a couple of years, forced to retire in 2011.

As I was looking down the road to “what am I going to do next?” I started what is now known as a podcast (I had no clue at the time).

Within six months of starting (what I called) “My online radio program” I was offered an opportunity to be on nationwide AM radio. I learned A LOT in one year of doing that!

I then started the online Christian radio platform "Evangelism Radio" in the fall of 2010. It has had listeners in 160+ nations and all 50 states. We host 50+ Christian broadcasters on a weekly basis. We have been operating 24/7 for almost 14 years now. We have been rated #1 in the world by Shoutcast. com on several occasions in our genre. We recently transferred ownership of Evangelism Radio to another ministry so I could concentrate full time on podcasting, preaching and writing.

In 2018, I started the Kingdom Cross Roads Podcast to conduct interviews with Christian influencers from all walks of life and to play their interviews on the radio station. (The KCR Podcast has its own time slot on Evangelism Radio)!
We now have over 1600 episodes and almost 1100 interviews (in just over 6 years).

Looking out at the future of online Christian media, I noticed there was no viable platforms that catered only to the Christian podcast market.

In 2023, we launched a networking platform called, "FaithCasters" which connects "Great Christian podcasters with Great Christian Guests!" This helps to promote the work you do through podcast interviews! Check it out at https://FaithCaster.org

We recently launched "FaithCaster Academy" which serves as a training hub for ALL of our trainings (podcast training / speaker training / interview training, etc.). Members receive access to ALL of our training programs for one low, monthly membership fee. Members also receive FREE access to ALL of the LIVE trainings I conduct (1 or 2 per month) - while non-members have to pay to access the live trainings.

Between my podcast training program, conducting podcast interviews, appearing on other podcasts as guests, speaking at conferences (in person and virtually) and the podcast networking platform, I guess you could say “I’m all in” when it comes to podcasting and online media!

My total focus is to do all we can to assist you to “Get The Word Out” about your mission, services, products, ministry, books, business, etc.
