Influencing Culture Through Social Media – Marnie Swedberg pt 1

Influencing Culture Through Social Media

Marnie Swedberg pt 1

Social media has become a major player in the culture, not just here in America, but around the world. It is almost impossible to do anything anymore without some kind of presence on social media. You are able to reach out and connect with people from your childhood school days, long lost relatives and people that you’ve never met from just about anywhere. If you have a business or ministry, you can reach people it would be almost impossible to reach, if not for social media.

But, despite all of those obvious benefits, social media can be a bit scary, too! It is very easy to get consumed by it. I mean, there was a time when I would spend almost four hours per day on social media and not get any work accomplished. That is when I made the decision to limit my time to just a few minutes per day, among other things.

But, to help us with understanding all of the nuances of social media, the “good, bad and the ugly,” is our good friend, Marnie Swedberg. Marnie was on a few months back and we just had such a great conversation – I just had to have back on to talk about social media today.

In case you missed episodes 968 and 969, let me share just a little bit about Marnie Swedberg.

She is the author of 13 books, a leadership mentor to over 15,000 leaders from 35 countries, providing a “God centric focus” with practical help and coaching. She is also the host of the #1 ranked and featured Blog Talk Radio program, “Marnie’s Friends Talk Radio: Perspective Transformation.”  She is also the founder and director of “Bible Study Expo” and “Woman Speaker.com” (the largest online directory of its kind in the world).

As I said, for those that may have missed your prior interview, other than that brief information I just shared, can you tell us in your own words, “Who is Marnie Swedberg?”

Social media can be beneficial, especially in business or ministry. In business, we are always trying to influence people to come to our store, our websites, to buy this or that or invest, etc. What are some simple ways that we can influence others to shop with us or come visit us, using social media?

What are the main platforms do we need to be on right now?

Do all of these social media platforms accomplish the same end result? Or should we use different platforms for different functions?

It seems like there are new social media platforms that are popping up every week. I know we should be paying attention to these new platforms and not just sticking with the well-known ones. I mean, there was a time when “My Space” was the place to be. Not so much anymore. People were all in on VHS and Beta tapes before, too. Block Buster Video stores were the rage. But times change.

How can we know when to change social media platforms and not be left in the dust when things change?

I referenced, in the opening, that I discovered I was spending way too much time on social media and not getting any work accomplished. After that, I barely use social media now. I might get on there for 10 minutes or so every day. I know I’m not utilizing social media the way I should be. My marketing assistant keeps harping at me to get with the times! Amen!  But I just find it hard to commit to going to down that road again.

How can we maximize the minutes we have available in order to invest in social media properly?

What about the algorithms and things like that? I heard or read that FaceBook only promotes your posts to about 20% of the contacts you have or something like that. That means 80% of the people you are trying to reach never see your posts. That doesn’t sound like a fair game to me, right?

How should someone get started into promoting their business on social media?
