Helping Leaders To Avoid Disaster

Gleb Tsipursky Pt 2

In the world we find ourselves today, with almost everything being driven by technology, business leaders make decisions that reach far beyond the immediate necessities of business. Often the decisions made will not see ramifications until far into the future. When the results come in, will the results received be the results desired?

If a wrong decision was made, but the intentions were good, is that still OK?

CEO’s are under constant pressure to deliver for stockholders and to increase the profitability of their companies. Often, Board of Directors, who are supposed to be the fiduciary’s of the company, often go for the quick buck as well. This often leads to problems down the road.

Think of Enron, Kodak, Blockbuster and MySpace just as examples. Bad examples. Where the leaders of those companies made short term decisions while ignoring the long term consequences. Or, as in the case of Kodak and Blockbuster, denied the coming future and changing technology and made decisions based on old, out dated data.

So many leaders today go with “gut instinct.” Often, we are told, “Go with your gut on this one.” When we hear that, the other person is actually say, “I don’t have enough information to give a valid response. So I’ll just rely on you.”

Well, my guest today is Gleb Tsipursky, otherwise known as the “Disaster Avoidance Expert.” He has made a career out of helping leaders and organizations avoid business disasters. He has written several books on this topic, but the one I invited him to talk about today is "Never Go With Your Gut: How Pioneering Leaders Make the Best Decisions and Avoid Disaster"

He has over twenty years of experience in this area. He does consulting, coaching, speaking and assists in training hundreds of companies across North America, Europe and Australia. Examples of some of the companies he has helped are AFLAC, IBM, Honda, Wells Fargo and the World Wildlife Fund, just to name a few. He has been featured in over 400 different articles and has conducted over 350 interviews on CBS News, CNBC and others, as well as Time, Business Insider, Government Executive and Inc. Magazine.

He has a strong research and teaching background, with more than 15 years in academia, including seven years as a professor at the Ohio State University and, before that, as a Fellow at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he also earned his PhD in the History of Behavioral Science.

You can read more about Gleb, his services and order his books, etc. by visiting his website at DisasterAvoidanceExperts.com.

The really good news is, he is here today to help YOU make the right decisions in your life, business or ministry as well.

In the business world, a current concept taught today is S-W-O-T. Where a leader is to figure out the Strength and Weakness of his or her own organization. Evaluate the Opportunity before them and balance that off the Threats presented. Is this sort of the same thing and does it work as well as it is believed to be?

I remember reading somewhere that Thomas Edison, the inventor of the electric light bulb, failed 20,000 times. And somebody asked him if he ever thought of giving up after so many failures. His response was, “Failures? I never failed one time. I discovered 20,000 different ways it would not work!”

Are there CEO’s that we think of, when their names are mentioned, as the “brilliant business minds of today?” Names like Jeff Bezos, Facebook’s Zuckerberg, or Jack Welch, etc. who, it has been said, “went with their gut.” Are those rumors true or just myths used in promoting their business prowess?

I’m still a little blown away by all of this. In your book, you mention there are over 100 different cognitive biases. Is there a way we, as individuals, can learn more about the cognitive biases we have so we don’t fall into the trap of making dangerous decisions?

In your book, you discuss the “8 Step Decision Making Model.” Can you explain this to us?

Is it true that a lot of poor outcomes comes from, not the decision or plan of action itself, but from the actual implementation of the plan?

I love that part about, “Imagine if the plan failed.” I often look at as, “What is the worst possible outcome of this situation?” And the next question is, “Would I be ok with that outcome?” Followed by, “Would I be able to adjust this plan on fly in order to achieve a positive outcome?”  Again, I relate that to my military training. But your training actually narrows this perspective to business folks. I love it.

Gleb, this is all so fascinating. I truly appreciate you taking the time to come on the program today and explain this in simple language for us. I believe what you shared today is going to help a lot of people. Amen!

The information Gleb Tsipursky has provided us today can change your life. Even if you are not the CEO of a major Dow Industrials company! Amen! This information can help you as a “mom and pop” business owner as well. The processes are the same. It just involves larger decision ramifications. BUT, the process is the same. And, the impact of the results are proportionately the same as well.

You need to get a copy of Gleb’s book, “Never Go with Your Gut.” This book is awesome. I’ve read it and it is full of information that will transform how you think and make decisions. Daily decisions as well. All for the better, too. Amen!

About your host

Profile picture for Robert Thibodeau

Robert Thibodeau

I am a 12 year Army veteran as both enlisted and as a commissioned Cavalry Officer.
I am now a retired law enforcement supervisor...

I had my own business for seven years before I entered law enforcement.

As a cop, I was injured on the job on May 12, 2007 and after several surgeries over a couple of years, forced to retire in 2011.

As I was looking down the road to “what am I going to do next?” I started what is now known as a podcast (I had no clue at the time).

Within six months of starting (what I called) “My online radio program” I was offered an opportunity to be on nationwide AM radio. I learned A LOT in one year of doing that!

I then started the online Christian radio platform "Evangelism Radio" in the fall of 2010. It has had listeners in 160+ nations and all 50 states. We host 50+ Christian broadcasters on a weekly basis. We have been operating 24/7 for almost 14 years now. We have been rated #1 in the world by Shoutcast. com on several occasions in our genre. We recently transferred ownership of Evangelism Radio to another ministry so I could concentrate full time on podcasting, preaching and writing.

In 2018, I started the Kingdom Cross Roads Podcast to conduct interviews with Christian influencers from all walks of life and to play their interviews on the radio station. (The KCR Podcast has its own time slot on Evangelism Radio)!
We now have over 1600 episodes and almost 1100 interviews (in just over 6 years).

Looking out at the future of online Christian media, I noticed there was no viable platforms that catered only to the Christian podcast market.

In 2023, we launched a networking platform called, "FaithCasters" which connects "Great Christian podcasters with Great Christian Guests!" This helps to promote the work you do through podcast interviews! Check it out at https://FaithCaster.org

We recently launched "FaithCaster Academy" which serves as a training hub for ALL of our trainings (podcast training / speaker training / interview training, etc.). Members receive access to ALL of our training programs for one low, monthly membership fee. Members also receive FREE access to ALL of the LIVE trainings I conduct (1 or 2 per month) - while non-members have to pay to access the live trainings.

Between my podcast training program, conducting podcast interviews, appearing on other podcasts as guests, speaking at conferences (in person and virtually) and the podcast networking platform, I guess you could say “I’m all in” when it comes to podcasting and online media!

My total focus is to do all we can to assist you to “Get The Word Out” about your mission, services, products, ministry, books, business, etc.
