A Spoonful of Courage – Dr. Charles Page pt 1

A Spoonful of Courage – Dr. Charles Page pt 1

Everyone has tests, trials and some tribulations in their life. It is a part of this life. Christians have a better grasp of understanding there is a life to come. One that we can only get a glimpse of, from time to time, while on this side of Eternity.

But, sometimes even Christians will falter a bit when under extreme pressure. Whether it is sickness, the loss of a loved one, a child battering a terminal illness, the loss of a business or a job. All of these things can test our Faith. Sometimes, even distract us enough to lose sight of our Faith.

In his book, “A Spoonful of Courage for the Sick and Suffering,” Dr. Charles Page shares some examples of how some of his patients taught him a thing or two about dealing with adversity. Sometimes it was a smile while in the midst of pain. Sometimes it was just a word. Sometimes it was just sharing what their life has been like. But in his book, he shares about how it all relates back to Faith. Faith in God. Faith in Jesus. Faith in our fellow man. Faith in what comes next.

Dr. Page tells folks that he is the best guy to see on the worst day of their life!  Praise God! I love that. Dr. Page is a surgeon, storyteller and author of several books for both adults and children. He and his wife live in Nacogdoches, Texas and he has taken time from his rounds this morning to join us on the broadcast! Praise God!

Help me welcome to the program, Dr. Charles Page!  Doctor, thank you for joining us today!

Now, the first question I always start with is this. Other than that short bio I read, tell us in your own words, “Who is Dr. Charles Page?”

One thing I left out of the introduction, because I wanted to make a comment on it here, is that you describe yourself as a “coffee addict.” I just wanted to say, “Me, too!” At least a pot and a half to two pots per day.” Amen.

Ok, I have several things I want to try and get to in our time today.

So, let’s start with your book, “A Spoonful of Courage.” It is a great read. I could not put it down once I started reading it. I read it almost all the way through in one sitting. The stories are heart moving and each has a simple, profound thought at the end. This book is an easy read and, as I said, it just motivates you to see “what’s next!”

What made you write this book and why in this format?

How do you learn to share the bad news, whether death or terminal illness, with folks?

One story that I found, interestingly amusing, was the one of the rancher who kept giving himself electric shock therapy. All because he did not trust the doctors. Tell us about that story…

One story that I found shocking was the one that you call, the “malingerer.” I could not fathom how someone would intentionally do harm to themselves in that manner. Fill us in on that and what the outcome was.
