Life in Ancient Israel – David Fiensy pt 4

Daily Life in Late Second Temple Israel – David Fiensy pt 4

Today, I have the blessing of talking with someone who is an expert when it comes to Biblical antiquities. For over 30 years, David Fiensy has been teaching Biblical studies and participating in numerous archaeological excavations and has a lot to share about ancient Palestine during the Roman occupation era in that area. He has written twelve academia books during the last 30 years. Now “semi-retired,” he has authored his first work of fiction, a novel titled “As Far As You Can.”  The setting is in Palestine about AD66 at the outbreak of the war against Rome.  We discussed that book in his last interview. You can hear all about that book if you go back into our archives and listen to episodes 428 and 429.What about family life in general?  Marriage, spousal responsibilities, etc?ow, today we are blessed to have some of the best medical care that mankind has ever known. We discussed some of the diseases in ancient Israel, in the days of Jesus.

Tell us about some of medical care that was available in the days of Jesus?

That makes sense when you think about the woman with the issue of blood and how she spent all her living and nothing worked.

What was the average life expectancy in that time?

From birth:

age 20

After age 20:

Men 37

Women: 34

Some lived longer, some not so much.

If someone did die, what were funerals like? Infant funerals – not so much of a big deal.

When I was growing up, I seen estimates that about 70% of Americans were in church on Sunday. And you could see it. Even small churches had their parking lots packed out. Today, I seen on estimate that less than 20% of Americans go to church anymore.  What was it like in the days of Jesus as far as religious responsibilities go? If someone “missed” going to the synagogue, was that a major deal?

David, when do you think we will be able to get a copy of this book?

Will you come back on the program when your book is published and update us?

If someone wanted to get in touch with you, to ask a question or possibly do an interview such as this, how can they do that?  How can someone get in touch with you?

Folks, we are about out of time for today. I want to recommend David Fiensy’s book that we have been discussing to you. It sounds absolutely fascinating. I know it will give you a deeper perspective and appreciation of the scriptures. You will need to add his book, “Archeology of Daily Life in Late Second Temple Israel” to your reading collection. Use it as a reference as you do your Bible Studies. It will add clarity like you probably have never seen or understood before. Common teachings you’ve heard for years will suddenly make a lot more sense.

Just click the link below to order your copy today.

Before we go, I want to make everyone aware of a new feature that I’ve added to our podcast ministry. For the last several years, I’ve assisted many Christians, both in ministry and out, in advice and ideas on how to either start a podcast or improve an existing podcast. I’ve recently started a program called, “ASK BOB.”  It allows you to send me your podcasting questions directly. Anything about podcasting that you want to ask. From “What is a podcast?” to “How do I monetize a podcast?” and anything in between. If I use your question on the “ASK BOB” program, I have a special gift for you. I’m not going to go into detail here because we are all out of time. But go to www.kcrpodcast.comand click the “Podcast Training” link at the top or just click the “Podcast Training” link in the show notes.

That is all the time we have for today.

David, I want to thank you one more time for taking the time out of your schedule to come on and visit with us for a few minutes and discuss your new book, “Archeology of Daily Life in Late Second Temple Israel.”  I do appreciate it.

For David Fiensy and myself, this is Pastor Bob reminding you to BE BLESSED IN ALL THAT YOU DO!
